People either love it, or hate it. Either it does not bother someone- they understand why the authors do what they do; they do not really think about it; or they think that it's a complete invasion of privacy, especially in the case of Real Person Fiction, or RPF.
I have written fan fiction longer than I even knew. In sixth grade, I wrote a story to go along with a pillow assignment. I made a guitar pillow because of my love for music and the story was my friends and me in a band. From there I moved and in eighth grade I decided to revive and expand the story. In that decision, I ended up adding real musicians in the story and it became the first fan fiction story I was exposed to and the first that I wrote.
Throughout the years I have written for myself, largely writing fan fiction because of my dislike for creating characters or dreaming of a better/different world. I have now started posting online to get feedback on my writing and to share with the other fan fiction writers- we read as much as we write. The whole time that I have been writing I have always questioned if writing fan fiction is "right." Is it wrong to write about real people that I don't know or characters I did not create?
That has lead to this website exploring fan fiction from everyone's point-of-view. I hope to one day turn this topic into a book, tentatively titled Fan or Fiction: Fan Fiction and Society. This website along with the book will explore:
- Fan Fiction Writers
- Fan Fiction Subjects
- Famous Fan Fiction Writers
- Former Fan Fiction Writers
- Types of Fan Fiction
- Why we Write Fan Fiction
- The Psychology of Fan Fiction
- The Psychology/Sociology of Celebrity
There will be more topics explored, but this is an overview. For examples of Fan Fiction, check out wattpad.com/stories/fanfiction. Check back soon because I will be posting articles as quickly as I can write them.
If you are a fan fiction writer, or you have strong feelings about the genre, please reach out to me at fanorfictionbook@gmail.com and I may include you in future posts!
Thanks for joining me on this journey!
